Our journey began in Passau, Germany,  a charming town built at the intersection of three rivers.. 

From there, we traveled into Austria to see the the grand baroque architecture in Linz and Vienna, visited the striking Melk Abbey high on the cliffs, and enjoyed the scenic sail through the vineyard-lined Wachau Valley.  

A day trip across the border to Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic added Bohemian charm with its winding cobblestone lanes and a towering 13th-century castle. 

In Bratislava, Slovakia, we walked the ancient Amber Road, saw the historic main square, and enjoyed the relaxed feel of the city below its hilltop castle. 

The cruise concluded in Budapest, Hungary, where dramatic architecture spanned both sides of the Danube. 

After the cruise, we traveled south to Zagreb, Croatia, to explore its lively squares, cafes, and historic upper town. 

From there, we drove into Ljubljana, Slovenia to  see its beautiful green parks, bridges, and mountain views, which included a ride on the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle to see the city's famous bridges. We finished our trip with a scenic drive to the historic "Town of Honey" in Radovljica and a beautiful emerald-green boat ride over Lake Bled.

The Vibes

• Imperial Grandeur. The massive palaces on Vienna's Ringstrasse and the colorful rococo houses of Passau felt incredibly grand. 

• Relaxed Capital Towns. The cobblestone streets of Bratislava's old town and the artistic upper town of Zagreb offered a charming, laid-back atmosphere. 

• Fairy-Tale Landscapes. The emerald-green waters of Lake Bled and the quiet mountain scenery of Radovljica looked like something straight out of a storybook. 

• Dramatic Riverfronts. The heights of Buda Hill provided stunning, panoramic views of the massive Chain Bridge and the Danube River below. 

The Flavors

• Classic European Pastries. The famous jam-filled Linzer Torte in Linz and traditional Sachertorte in Vienna highlighted our stops at local coffee houses. 

• Traditional Regional Dishes. Authentic local meals throughout the journey - from savory Hungarian fare in Keszthely to classic regional comfort food on the ship - offered a delicious taste of Central Europe's diverse culinary traditions.

• Handcrafted Holiday Treats. Custom gingerbread decorating at a historic inn in Radovljica offered a fun look into Slovenia's traditions.

As a first-time Viking cruiser traveling with my seasoned parents, I quickly understood why they enjoy this travel style. The entire experience was effortless because Viking handled every meal, logistic, and daily itinerary detail.
